We are a small team of volunteers and besides donations the biggest help for us is if you act directly instead of asking us to help you. It should not sound rude but we mostly waste important time to search for the described place and animal with no result. 

• If you see an animal in need, please take it ASAP to one of our three local vets (contacts below)
• if you see animal abuse or cruelty please report it. We can only act if a case is opened at the police (Police station is at the old Harbour/bus station) 
• if you like to adopt please don’t waste time. Check your flight if it’s possible to take the animal you fallen in love with with you. Then contact our vets and go directly to them to assist you with the paper work for adoption.

Report animal abuse/cruelty 

If you see an farm animal which isn’t in good condition, is hold in the sun without water and shade, or had ropes on there legs, please report it! You can try to speak with the owner, but it often will not change anything. Make pictures, note the exact location and please go in person to the police and report it. If you have a case number you can call a vet if the animal is hurt or need emergency cares. Our vets or we can only act if the case is reported at the police.

Another way to help in that situation is to make it public and use social media for you to show people how the animals are treaten. It seems less but never underestimate the power of social media. Don’t forget to tag the municipality, the mayor and us! 

A small overview about the adoption process:

Giving a lovely stray an forever home with love and daily care is the greatest what you can do for them. We show a lot of available cats on social media. If you see there one which catches your heart please let us know. But have in mind as long at the animal live free we can’t guarantee that everything will be fine until the adoption can be done. Infections, accidents etc can always happen. Have also in your mind that some very normal issues with strays will follow them for a long time. That means psychological or physiological issues. But be sure, the animal will love you for giving him safety and care and all issues are worth to handle! I can tell by my own experience and promise you these souls are worth every step you go with them. 

If you are on the island and found an animal you like to adopt please check your flight for carrying the animal with you and act ASAP. Time is very important if we have less. Costs vary depending the final destination:
Passport and standard vaccines are around 150-250€ depending on your wishes and law. Flights are additional between 50-150€. 

Checklist for adoption:

• Book the ticket for the animal
• Bring the animal to one of our three vets
• Let’s do tests for the health and decide which vaccines additional to the required ones 
• Buy a carrier for the flight (new regulations say it must have four side windows) 
• Have a safe flight :)

Bringing a cat home from Greece to the UK

You will need to organise transport from Greece. All pets have to go through Athens airport as they are equipped to do the necessary checks. The contacts I have are for arranging transport from Athens airport to the UK are [email protected] and [email protected]

You have to be at Athens airport to complete all the checks earlier than normal flights, about 4 hours earlier but the contact team at Athens airport let you know the time.

To get from Mykonos to Athens it’s a quick flight, and the airlines that allow pets allow them in the cabin. I’m flying with https://en.aegeanair.com

For flights to the UK, you will need to fly with airlines that allow pets as cargo. I’ve been using British Airways as the import costs from the UK agent were cheaper with them, but other airlines are available. 

You will need an agent in the UK to complete all the necessary checks. Only certain airports in the UK have these facilities. I’ve been using

If you’re staying overnight in Athens you’ll need a pet friendly hotel, I’m staying at https://sofitelathensairport.com-hotel.com purely for convenience but it is expensive. 

A vet in Greece will need to complete the vaccinations and give the pet a microchip, and sort a pet passport for you (Mykonos Animal Welfare arranged this for me!), and you have to wait 21 days after the vaccinations before the pet can travel.

Cost estimates: so far it’s costing me about £1,200 (but it will be worth it!)

• Help us sterilize 

A clipped ear is a sign that the stray animal is sterilized. With 30k+ stray cats we have to control the overpopulation. But that isn’t easy because a lot of local people don’t believe in the sterilization because of religion or at least because they don’t care. But a stray life is packed with danger and often suffer of diseases and torture. Poisoning is often a tool for big hotels or clubs to clean there area and pregnant animals will put into garbage to die if they will not be drown or hung. It sound horrifying for you? It is and imagine which pain and fear the animal will experience.
So the best choice will be to sterilize the animals and stop uncountable pregnancies, diseases and suffer! If you like to help us here, loan a cage at one of our pet shops or vets (sometimes also at Chora store behind Alpha Bank) and catch the cat you like to sterilize. A sterilization is around 50-90€ (depends on the municipality program or if the organisation will pay for it). If you would like to support us with taking over the costs we are very thankful. Ask for a discount because it is a stray. If you can’t effort the surgery please ask the vet to use donations from MAW. 

• Monthly or one time donation 

Our work is 100% volunterring and what we can do for the animals lives from your donation. We are thankful for each single cent we can collect for our animals. Bills have to be payed! If you do a one time donation or a monthly giving it will help us to change the life of the animals. Think about all the wasted money sometimes and if you want to do something really good for all them who can’t help themself. Only together we can be the change! 

• Volunteering 

We need volunteers for our daily work and emergency help. The work will include:

• feeding at our stations 
• foster care for insured animals (mostly cats) 
• emergency drives to a vet 
• catching cats for sterilizations
• spreading our spirit and word 

If you like to help us for one day, a week or longer, if you are local or foreigner, all of you are welcome. Please contact us!

• Flight escorts

Bringing a beloved animal into there new home is one of the greatest gifts you can give. Please contact us if you will offer us that opportunity ASAP if you have your flight dates and has checked if you can carry one or two animals with you in the cabin. Cargo is our second choice and depends on the animal if it’s possible or to horrifying for them! 

• Leave a Legacy

You can also include our animal welfare organization on your last will. If you don’t have heirs and you want to give thousands of animals the chance for a better life we are very thankful if our animals get your help!
